New Music From The Brunettes

The Brunettes give HEAVE 'The Crime Machine.'

New Zealand's The Brunettes carry on the fine tradition of Kiwi-Twee (The Clean, The Ruby Suns) with their latest album, Paper Dolls.  "The Crime Machine" is a snappy happy inoffensive song longing for the glamour and danger 1920's American lawlessness.  Singer Heather Mansfield's nasal cuteness recalls the nasal cuteness of Patty Donahue from The Waitresses ("I Know What Boys Like"). Who doesn't love that?  Plus, you can never turn down the sophisticated pop stylings brought forth by a vintage Casiotone.

So, if you're not interested in spending 22 hours on an airplane to experience the celestial beauty of New Zealand first hand, just let the Brunettes be your personal tour guides while you space out in your head phones.

Paper Dolls will be available early next year via Sub Pop.

Nice to Meet You: Kid, You’ll Move Mountains

Dr. Seuss, thank you for writing Oh the Places You’ll Go. Otherwise we wouldn’t have Kid, You’ll Move Mountains

I feel like I write a lot about bands from Chicago and although the band this week comes from the suburbs of Illinois I still feel a trend.  Coming out of the fallout of Lookout! Records and their old band Read On

This better not be another joke, Reggie and the Full Effect.

Coming down from our recent exposé of Conor Oberst this week we’re going to be focusing on another lone musician, James Dewees the orchestrator of Reggie & The Full Effect.  Formerly from The Get Up Kids and Coalesce, the Kansas City native and multi-instrumentalist was also the touring keyboardist for My Chemical Romance and New Found Glory as well as the drummer for post-hardcore outfit Leathermouth...

Girls Are Rad: fanshaw

Though fanshaw is lowercase, Olivia Fetherstonhaugh proves herself anything but.

Vancouver has always played host to a wealth of bands; in recent years, ones that have risen to indie stardom like The New Pornographers, Neko Case, The Handsome Family, Hot Hot Heat, Black Mountain, and Carolyn Mark—many of whom have been involved with Mint Records in some way, shape, or form...

'Felt 3: A Tribute to Rosie Perez' Released

Murs, Slug and Aesop Rock give an eclectic grab bag.

November 17th has passed and saw Felt 3: A Tribute to Rosie Perez release. The rap duo Murs and Slug have teamed up with Aesop rock to bring a nice mix of strong versus, interesting, atmospheric beats and the trippy interludes only Aesop could bring to an album. What results with this trio is an album with almost twice as many tracks as any other Felt release...
