And Now You Have
Each week we try to enhance your "Have you heard of this band?" knowledge. This week you get to know The Wee Turtles.
There is something creative in the water of Athens, Georgia. Athens has produced such bands as The B-52’s and REM, along with great indie labels like Elephant Six Recording Company and Kindercore Records. Elephant 6 gave us the rise of Of Montreal, Apples in Stereo, Olivia Tremor Control and Neutral Milk Hotel – while Kindercore Records delivered The Masters Of The Hemisphere and Sunshine Fix.
Lost in the shuffle of all of this was a band called The Wee Turtles. They deliver an oft-duplicated lo-fi sound that can be heard in a bunch of indie bands today, while possessing an undeniable ability to bring you in with a hook that would make their fellow Athenians proud. The Wee Turtles saw their career run by them like a bunny, however, as they got together in 1998 and only survived to record one album entitled This Land is Your Land, which was released in 2000.
“Invisible Girl? delivers all that is promised from above, and includes an almost Frampton like talking guitar that should put a smile on anybody’s face who enjoys “Do You Feel Like We Do.? Speaking of Frampton, The Wee Turtles got their name from Simpson’s character Groundskeeper Willie; Willie has a quote in an episode where he says, “If I don’t save the wee turtles, who will?? Impress all of your friends with that “And Now You Have? tidbit, and listen to “Invisible Girl? below.

The Fiery Furnances – Ex-Guru - The Oak Park-based eccentric brother-sister duo is back with another wonderfully bizarre pop gem. "Ex-Guru" combines a funk beat filtered through quirky keyboard sounds, flutes and delay-heavy guitars riffs into a song about failed spiritual guidance, with the line "She means nothing to me now/I tell myself every single day" repeating throughout the chorus...

Missed Out Music
Audible delivers a mellow sound that should not be missed.
Once in a while a band will come along and you will listen to them, but you will only listen to them because of the label they are on. Such was the case with Audible; Sky Signal came out when I was the music director at a college radio station, and it came in during the part of the day where I was basing whether or not I wanted to listen to something by it’s cover art. Audible’s cover art was pretty boring (letters on fire spelling out the band name) – so they failed test one...

Across The Pond
Johnny Marr becomes a professor, The Cribs battle through illness and Noah and the Whale.
The US version of the NME Rock N Roll Riot Tour kicked off this weekend in Providence, RI. where Art Brut and The Hold Steady gave rollicking performances. Apparently, Art Brut front man Eddie Argos woke up twenty minutes after the scheduled flight from San Francisco to New York took off. After a tearful exchange at the check-in desk, Eddie's plight convinced the airline to extradite his working-class self across the country just in time. "I could feel these tears on my face," he said...
