Missed Out Music

Audible delivers a mellow sound that should not be missed.

Once in a while a band will come along and you will listen to them, but you will only listen to them because of the label they are on. Such was the case with Audible; Sky Signal came out when I was the music director at a college radio station, and it came in during the part of the day where I was basing whether or not I wanted to listen to something by it’s cover art. Audible’s cover art was pretty boring (letters on fire spelling out the band name) – so they failed test one. But the CD had a Polyvinyl Records sticker on it, so the argyle wearing kid inside of me gave it a spin. I enjoyed it through first listen, and I started to enjoy it even more after multiple rotations.

Created in Philadelphia in 2000, Audible started off as the solo work of Mike Kennedy. A few months passed and he was asked to open for Bright Eyes, so he employed his then girlfriend, Mary Garito, as a helping hand in the live show. Things started getting bigger, and a third member, Jim Kehoe, joined the band.

Audible got put on hold in 2001 as Kennedy and Kehoe joined Matt Pond PA. They left Matt Pond PA in 2003, got Mary back on board and turned all of their attention to Audible. Always aiming to please apparently, Kennedy added bassist (and current girlfriend) Kris Muller to the lineup. Sean Byrne joined in on the drums.

Sky Signal released in early January 2005 on Polyvinyl Records, and seems to be an essential album for anyone looking to expand on their Sunday morning music collection. There is nothing revolutionary or gripping about Audible. They won’t knock you off your feet, and they surely won’t make you have any wonders about whether or not you need to change your life around. Sky Signal just a mellow Indie-Pop album, and sometimes that’s all you need. Listen to “October Song? below.
