Your Listening Pleasure
A small taste of new music. Figurines, We Are Wolves and The Fiery Furnances in this week's edition.
The Fiery Furnances – Ex-Guru - The Oak Park-based eccentric brother-sister duo is back with another wonderfully bizarre pop gem. "Ex-Guru" combines a funk beat filtered through quirky keyboard sounds, flutes and delay-heavy guitars riffs into a song about failed spiritual guidance, with the line "She means nothing to me now/I tell myself every single day" repeating throughout the chorus. The band throws listeners for a loop with a Middle-Eastern inspired breakdown in the middle, which would seem unusual for most bands, but is par the course for The Fiery Furnaces.
Widow City is out now on Thrill Jockey Records.
We Are Wolves – Fight and Kiss - It seems like Canadian indie bands pop up left and right these days, but Montreal-based We Are Wolves offers something different from the mass of 12-member epic rock bands out there. Armed with a driving beat, bass guitar and all manner of 8-bit synthesizer sounds, the band creates a dose of immediately catchy video game boss battle-inspired keyboard rock. Highly recommended for fans of Thunderbirds Are Now! or So Many Dynamos.
Total Magique is out now on Dare To Care Records.
Figurines – Hey Girl - Scandinavia seems like the place to be for sweet, sugary pop rock, and the Copenhagen-based Figurines are no exception. Layered male vocals, guitars and an organ riff with hints of psychedelia drive the track to its catchy but rockin' bliss. Guitarist/vocalist Christian Hjelm recalls a dispute with a girl, musing, "Sometimes life ain't fair, but did we care when were there?" Despite the overly vague lyrics, Figurines still craft a fine pop tune. Besides, who even pays attention to the verses of a pop song? I sure don't.
When The Deer Wore Blue is out now on Morningside Records.
