Reel Big Fish and Cap'n Jazz take on "Take On Me."
Quick, name the best music video from the mid-1980's by a band with a two syllable, hyphenated name. That's right. "Take on Me," by A-ha. Without a doubt one of the greatest music videos ever and performed by a band that nobody really remembers. You get an imaginary cookie if you can name any of their other songs without the use of Wikipedia. But really, who cares if they only had one song? That one song sold almost nine million copies. YLP returns with The Chromatics and Crystal Castles
Crystal Castles- Crimewave - Remember all those sweet, glitchy sound effects you heard while playing your favorite Nintendo games way back when? Take that sound palette, add dour female vocals, Fischerspooner-style bass lines and a pulsing, fuzzy backbeat and you've got Crystal Castles. Here, the Toronto-based duo reinterprets (and completely improves) LA-based experimental rock band Health's track, "Crimewave," turning it into something you might actually want to dance to.Their self-titled debut will be out February 19th on Last Gang Records.
The Chromatics - Night Drive - Taking its cues from Italo Disco and 80's Synth Pop, the female-fronted group creates dark, moody, but danceable tunes. From the tinny keyboards, minimal drums and palm-muted guitar, the overall sparseness of the instrumentation complements the barely sung vocals. Overall, "Night Drive" perfectly encapsulates the feeling of cruising through the city late at night, when the bright lights are still on, but everyone else is asleep.
Night Drive is out now on Italians Do It Better Records.
