The Week That Was
Peeps freak my shit out because I feel like the eyes follow me all around the room like a GD trick painting.
Friday: Breaking Weezy news!
Our boy has decided to launch a website from prison. That’s right—Lil
Wayne (or technically, his team) launched Weezy
Thanx You as a
way for him to stay in touch with his fans while he’s behind bars
for a year. I couldn’t be more thrilled by this if I tried. Also,
you better believe that I’m ordering a “Free Weezy” t-shirt. Wait,
they’re 30 DAMN DOLLAS. Maybe I’ll just wear a band-aid on my face
for him like Nelly did back in the day.
Saturday: Wow. Erykah Badu cannot catch a break. It seems like people aren’t loving her naked JFK assassination reenactment video all that much. Specifically, people in Dallas. Like the police, who are charging her with disorderly conduct. As a result, she may be forced to pay a fine of up to $500. Whatever. Nudity is priceless.
Sunday: In theory, I think
Peeps as a food are revolting. In actuality, I think that Peeps as a
concept are ADORABLE. What’s more adorable than a marshmallow that’s
dyed within an inch of its fake life and shaped into a precious animal?
Dioramas that use said dyed and shaped marshmallows. This shit is why
I love The Washington Post. Check
‘em out, and
lament the fact that you’ll never be half as creative as these people.
Monday: Oh hey, meeting of
the rap minds. How you doin’? Jay-Z and Dr. Dre have collaborated
on a new single entitled “Under Pressure.” There’s no way that
it’ll be as good as the Queen song, but I guess I’m still excited
for it. No one knows if it’s linked to that Dr. Dre album (Detox)
that’s never, ever going to be released, or if it’s just a single
that the two put together in their spare time, but it exists, and you
might hear it at some point. Talk about substantial, informative news!
In the mood for some psychedelic tunes this summer? You’re in luck. Neon Indian is set to tour from May to July, hitting up Sasquatch and Bonnaroo, along with non-festival appearances in Austin, Cincinnati, Baltimore, Milwaukee, and a few other locales.
Tuesday: And now, the line-up
you’ve heard so much about, but might still be anticipating…Lollapalooza! If I’m being honest, I’ve got
to say that it sounds pretty awesome. It’s getting hip to hate on
Lolla, but almost every band I’ve liked in the past three years is
going to be there this year, so I’m pleased. That being said, I’m
DISPLEASED that it’s a recession and my poor ass can’t afford to
go. Ah well. At least someone in the world will be able to enjoy the
mindfuck that will be Lady GaGa and Yeasayer in the same space.
Not sure how pleased I am by this—Bloc Party’s main man Kele Okereke has gone rogue! Well, he’s released a solo album, but rogue sounds more dangerous. Anywho, he’s adopted the “Cher model” and ditched the “Okereke.” Kele’s electronic pop album—The Boxer—drops on June 22, and was produced by Spank Rock producer XXXChange. So there’s definitely some hope for it.
Wednesday: I’m really loving albums of solely covers these days. I just got The Bird and the Bee’s rendition of Hall & Oates (verdict? Suprisingly awesome.), and I can’t wait to hear the Mates of State take on Girls, Death Cab for Cutie, Tom Waits, Nick Cave, and others. Crushes (The Covers Mixtape) is set for a summer debut.
Thursday: The riot grrl in me is so excited by this news—Corin Tucker of Sleater-Kinney is releasing a solo disc in October. In an interview with Portland Mercury, Tucker mentions that it’s going to be more of a “middle-aged mom” record, but I’m betting that Tucker’s mom-ness is probably 50% more wail-y than other moms. Therefore, it’ll still probably be a great album.
Malcolm McLaren, the former manager of the Sex Pistols and the New York Dolls, passed away today at the age of 64 after battling cancer. Here’s a cool quote from him about what he thought his job consisted of: "Somehow or another, I remain permanently cool [...] I try to make ideas happen-- ideas that could change life." He certainly changed a few lives during his 64 years. Rest in peace, Malcolm.
