We've Got You Covered: The Morning Pages, Lady Gaga, and 'Telephone'

The Morning Pages gives Lady Gaga's 'Telephone' an alt-country twist

When Lady Gaga and Beyonce teamed up to do the single "Telephone" for Fame Monster, it seems like every straight woman, gay man, and closet pop fan went wild.  Two of America's pop divas were singing together on one song.  It was like crack on the radio.  The Morning Pages took a stab at "Telephone" and might I say, create something that everyone can enjoy.  Where Gaga's "Telephone" was a club sensation, the Morning Pages' verison shows that the most mundane pop song about avoiding phone calls while out on a wild dancing binge can turn into a country-infused hoedown.  Music fans need no longer feel guilty about listening to Gaga hits when bands like the Morning Pages are providing covers of this caliber.  Lead singer Grant Maxwell echoes my sentiment.  "A great song is a great song and indie music doesn't have to be all dissonant and obscure and depressing all the time," said Maxwell about his choice to cover "Telephone."  "And on the other hand pop music could stand to sound a lot more organic and musical. My thought was they maybe we could combine the depth of roots music with the visceral enjoyment and popular appeal of mainstream music and get the next revolution started....also, I just couldn't get that song out of my head!"  The band also made a music video to accompany their version of "Telephone."  Full of cowboy hats, tin can phones, and slide guitars, the music video answers the question "How would buggaboos be handled in the 1800s?"
