The Week That Was
Dear Ryan Adams: I'd be more interested in your metal album if Mandy Moore toured as your drummer and developed a needle drug habit, was spit out the low end of the music industry, and eventually had to turn to nude modeling. Just sayin.'
Friday: I still don’t understand
how Ryan Adams and Mandy Moore are married. My disbelief runs so deep
that I just Wikipedia’d their asses to ensure that yes, they are spouses.
I don’t like it one bit, but whatever. Ryan NEVER asks for my advice
before making huge life decisions anymore. Anyway, speaking of not asking
for my advice before making huge life decisions, he also didn’t check
with me if it was cool for him to make a “metal” album.
He wrote on his website that his label is set to start pressing ORION on vinyl next week. Now, that album title might sound like a joke, and Lord knows Adams loves to prank around online, but he’s calling it “legit.” Also, there’s a poll where listeners can vote on whether or not they’d buy the record. Because nothing say “legit” like an online poll.
Saturday: When it comes to
beer, what ratio of hops to barley do you prefer? What about the barley
to Tweedy ratio? If you want to jump on that ratio, try to get your
hands on California-based Lagunitas Brewing Company’s new spring brew,
Wilco Tango Foxtrot. I couldn’t make this up if I tried.
Sunday: And it’s Alice in
Wonderland for the box office win with $62.7 million! I must say, though,
I found the movie to be insanely boooorrriiinnnggg. I get that I have
unrealistically high expectations for almost every magical movie out
there, but seriously. My friend Sanja put it perfectly: Alice looked
bored and sick throughout the whole movie. Cheer up, kid. You’ve given
Hot Topic yet another movie tie-in to hype until the end of days.
Monday: NPR is the best. Head over to their site right now to stream She & Him’s Volume 2!
This is ridiculous, and shows
just how lame I am. I saw a headline about the new Devendra Bahnhart video, and thought to myself: “Hold up.
Are GZA and RZA brothers?” At least in the Wu-Tang sense, sure. Anyway,
check it out if you want to see Andrew VanWyngarden of MGMT, GZA, and
Fabrizio Moretti hang out at a crazy party. Which you do.
Tuesday: Passion Pit has been at work polishing their manners, apparently. All bad puns aside, Manners is getting reissued on April 13 with three bonus tracks and brand spankin’ new artwork. The new tracks include stripped-down versions of “Sleepyhead” and “Moth’s Wings” (um, my fave songs), and a cover of Cranberries’ “Dreams.”
Go listen to Ted Leo and the Pharmacists cover Tears for Fears. It’s worth the click.
Maybe I’m just in a bad mood
today, but the thought of writing about a Björk and Michel Gondry collaboration
makes me tired. It’s possible that my avant-garde sense (kind of like
a Spidey-sense, but less cool) will be all a-twitter over this tomorrow,
but not today. They’re writing a “scientific musical,” though
technically, her publicist hasn’t confirmed anything. So maybe they
just got together and talked about Yo Gabba Gabba!
Wednesday: The thought of writing about a collaboration between Jay-Z and Jack White EXILIRATES ME. I love both of them, and separately, the two of them have made me think about/do awesome things. Like want to make a guitar out of a board and a Coke bottle (thanks, It Might Get Loud) and rap “99 Problems” in its entirety to literally anyone who will stand around and listen. So once they’re together, I might rap while simultaneously accompanying myself on a Coke bottle guitar. In reality, they’ve only collaborated on one song (so far), but as Jack White said to UK GQ, “it was incredible.” RELEASE THIS SHIT NOW.
More Record Store Day (April 17!) fun: to commemorate the 10th anniversary of The Moon & Antarctica, Epic/Legacy are set to reissue it on vinyl. It was remastered using the 2004 master, but has the original tracklisting and artwork. Initiate nerd freak-out now!
Thursday: A sad day today.
Alex Chilton (of Big Star, Box Tops, and solo fame) passed away today
at the age of 59. No confirmed cause of death has been released yet,
but according to Memphis Commerical Appeal, he complained that he felt
ill and was taken to the hospital. The paper is reporting that he may
have had a heart attack. He will be missed by many, many fans.
Remember that awesome upcoming Record Club collaboration between Os Mutantes, Beck, St. Vincent, and Liars? Yeah, they covered INXS’ 1987 album Kick. Can I say that’s rad? Perhaps gnarly? Nah, I’ll stick with rad.
