The Week That Was
Alyssa loves Weezy so much that she's going to reinact the "Midnight Express" visitation scene. For what it's worth, I'll be doing the same thing.
Thursday: Did you miss me,
darlings? Well, you’re about to be richly rewarded for dealing with
last week’s terribly abbreviated article. You get one whole extra
day of my commentary this week! I believe that’s what Roald Dahl would
term “a golden ticket.” Let’s get to it, shall we?
It can’t already be time to point the sellout finger at Neon Indian. They JUST got cool, I thought. Though with news of Mountain Dew’s Green Label Sound releasing an exclusive (and free) Neon Indian track next month, some pointing may be warranted. Except for the fact that Matt & Kim, the Cool Kids, and Chromeo have all participated in this thang, and I still think they’re awesome. So, rock on, Mountain Dew.
Unfortunately, the search for Growing Pains star Andrew Koenig has come to a tragic conclusion. His body was found in Vancouver’s Stanley Park today, and his father stated that Koenig had committed suicide. Our condolences to his family, friends, and fans.
Friday: It’s about time we had some more news from the Land of Reissues. This go-around gives us some oldies from Destroyer. Merge is set to release three early albums from the band’s career—City of Daughters, Thief, and Streethawk: A Seduction—on April 20.
In case you’re all “lame! I want three NEW albums by someone!”, look no further than Robyn. Yeah, she’s not quite like Destroyer, but deal with it. She put together three freaking albums for you. They’ll be released this spring, summer, and winter, and these tracks have some of the greatest descriptions ever. There’s a “rap duel” with Snoop Dogg, a song called “Don’t Fucking Tell Me What To Do,” and tracks produced by Röyksopp and Diplo. Put on your excited pants.
Saturday: I read Us magazine every so often just for their “Stars—They’re Just Like Us!” photo spread, which includes pictures of celebrities looking ugly while buying paper towels or looking slightly less ugly and holding their kid’s hand. I seek out these moments in my own life, and was lucky to have one with Johnny Depp. He’s just like me, because he listens to Sunset Rubdown! Apparently, director Terry Gillam turned him onto them, and they helped to inspire his characterization of the Mad Hatter.
Sunday: Shutter Island won the box office battle again this week with $22.2 million in sales.
But the real shocker is the fact that Cop Out came is second,
making $18.6 million. That is a boatload of money to make off of a movie
that essentially capitalizes on the CRAZY of one glorious actor. In
other news, The Crazies made $16.5 million.
Monday: Well. This is one of
the more natural news stories I’ve seen lately. Chris Walla—the
Death Cab for Cutie guitarist who can’t seem to stop producing his
own band and other bands in his spare time—started a label called
Trans. It’s part of Warner Music’s Independent Label Group, and
he’s signed the Lonely Forest as his first act.
Yay for rescheduled tour dates! You may remember that The Very Best had to cancel some tour dates back in the fall, but they haven’t forgotten about that! They’re set to hit up New York, Chicago, and Baltimore, among others, in addition to SXSW and Sasquatch.
Tuesday: I fucking love Lil’ Wayne. His sentencing was delayed for the second time today. Why? Does the man need more work done on his grill? Nope. It’s because the courthouse caught on fire! ON FIRE. The sentencing hasn’t been rescheduled yet, but I can’t wait to see what the inevitable third delay will be due to…
Oh, Band of Horses. I used
to hate you, and now, you’re all I want to listen to on certain days.
Their third album (Infinite Arms) is set for a May 18 release,
though there’s no word yet on what label it will be released by.
Wednesday: In terms of bands I couldn’t care less about, Jane’s Addiction is pretty high up on the list. However, it’s important to note that bassist Eric Avery has officially left the band. It’s been confirmed by both his and Dave Navarro’s Twitter feeds and everything. Navarro’s tweet sounds slightly more optimistic, wishing Avery “all the best,” but Avery sounds a little more melancholy, stating that “with equal parts regret and relief, the janes addiction experiment is at an end." Hmm…that’s all the curiosity I can muster about that.
Thursday: James Brown may have
been the original hardest working man in show business, but James Murphy
of LCD Soundsystem comes in a close second. In addition to providing
new material for the soundtrack to Noah Baumbach’s upcoming film Greenberg, the third LCD Soundsystem album has gotten a May 18 release.
It’s got nine tracks and runs 65 minutes. Get ready.
And Lil’ Wayne can no longer elude the judicial system! His sentencing has been scheduled for this Monday. We’ll be waiting for you when you get out, Weezy.
