The Winter-Be-Gone Mixtape
Seriously - it's March, so cut the shit.
If you are one of the many people stuck in a land of endless snow and countless days of below freezing temperatures, then you’re probably ready for winter to be over. I’ll agree that I love the first snow of the year, but that crap was only cute back in December. It’s finally March, and for many, myself included, sunlight and spring would be wonderful. This week is a mixtape to provide wishful thinking or at least fool you into believing that we’ll never have to see another snowflake again until next December.
The Rapture - The Coming of Spring - The title pretty much says it all. Then again the last time I saw The Rapture I was full of BBQ and free booze in Austin, TX so maybe I just hear this electro-pop band and it gets my hopes up.
Phantom Planet - One Ray Of Sunlight - I think everyone can sing along and agree with this chorus; “If I get one ray of sunlight to hold in my hand, maybe we can be happy again.” Although Phantom Planet lives in California, so they have no right to complain about any lack of sun.
Eagles of Death Metal - WannaBe in L.A. - Speaking of California, I’ve never really felt the desire to move to Los Angeles. Yet when it hits the point my snot is freezing, and this song comes on, I seriously consider walking to a U-haul store, renting a truck, packing up, and heading out West.
Ha Ha Tonka - 12-inch Three-Speed Oscillating Fan - A staple at any live Ha Ha Tonka show, this Big Smith cover is a rousing hoedown that will make you dance enough to actually need a 12-inch three-speed oscillating fan to cool off.
Fountains of Wayne - It Must Be Summer - This sugary gem makes me want to hope on my bike, eat a popsicle, and roll around in a grassy field. Fountains of Wayne consistently churned out sticky sweet tunes, so if you’re feeling blue I suggest you throw on Utopia Parkway and call it a day.)
Girl Talk - Play Your Part (Pt. 1) - The warmer months to me conjure memories of hours spent at festivals dancing with other sweaty, smelly people, and the closest you can get to that feeling at home is playing some Girl Talk. Thank you Gregg Gillis for keeping the warmer months alive year round.
Mason & Princess Superstar - Perfect (Exceeder) - If deep down inside you want to be a club kid that flies to Ibiza, stays up 12 hours dancing (possibly fueled by ecstasy) and wake up on the beach naked, then this song is for you. In all honesty, this dance jam can cure the most sever case of winter blues.
Yelle - Je Veux Te Voir - The thing I love about pop music in another language is the fact you don’t have to concentrate on the lyrics, you just bop along. Hipster darling and Magic Johnson namedropping Yelle provides a French flair and heady beats.
M.I.A. & Diplo - Sunshowers (Diplo mix) - M.I.A. already had a good thing going with the original track, but then Diplo comes in and makes the addition of a Salt-n-Pepa sample and this track becomes a complete win. Plus I can’t think of anything better to melt snow than showers of sun.
Sex Pistols - Holiday In The Sun - If all else fails, and you can’t escape the choke of winter, take a cue from some punk legends and have a holiday in the sun. Sure, you’ll have to come home and put back on seven layers to go outside, but for a brief moment you’ll be golden.
