The New Year Mixtape

Because we can all pretend that personal baggage stays a year behind you.

Another year has come and gone, so welcome to 2009. Personally it's off to a good start, and hopefully this year will be a lot better for many than the last. Rather than make resolutions that no one keeps, I just see the switch of a calendar and the increase of a number on the date I write as a new beginning. And after a doozy of a year, who doesn't like an excuse to call it even and start fresh? Leave some baggage of the past year behind, listen to some rip-roaring tunes, and face 2009 with a fresh start.

Third Eye Blind - Losing A Whole Year - If the past year has been a sham and you'd like a do over, then this is the anthem for you. Also mid to late 90's rock fixes a lot of problems (with the exception of Creed, of course).

Bright Eyes - One Foot In Front Of The Other - If you've had a bad breaking of your heart this year and need to put the nail in a relationship coffin, emo crooner Conor Oberst can help you out. A good place to start when walking away is just one foot in front of the other.

Death Cab For Cutie - The New Year - Much like not feeling older the day after your birthday, January 1st seems like just another day. If you're not the optimistic at the start of 2009, then this track is for you.

David Bowie - Changes - I'm not sure what Bowie means by "turn and face the strange," but change isn't a bad thing. Go forth and change your life this year. Because David Bowie is never wrong. Except for that whole "Dancin In the Streets" cover he did with Mick Jagger.

Spoon - Something To Look Forward To - Yes Britt Daniels, please give me something to look forward to. Perhaps a better year? I think so.

The Walkmen - In The New Year - Whiskey and gritty tinged indie rockers The Walkmen have a more than usual amount of songs written containing the words "new year," so they obviously know what they are talking about here.

Weezer - The Good Life - I really hope that I shake a lot of booty and make some sweet love all night just like Rivers sings in the year 2009. Keeping my fingers crossed folks.

Wendy O. Williams - It's My Life - If you spend too much time caring for others, maybe you should put yourself first in 2009. And punk rock female phenomenon Wendy O. Williams created a pretty bad ass anthem to remind us that in life we should do what we want to do.

The Thermals - Pillar of Salt - This song has made multiple appearances throughout the past year, but you can't deny this song makes you want to make something more of life. Every time I hear this song, I either want to hug people, punch things, cry while smiling, or continually pump my fist in the air. That's got to count for something.

Animal Collective - Fireworks - Animal Collective create languish and mesmerizing tracks that make copious amounts of people happy. If you can't set off real Fireworks for the New Year, then set off Animal Collectives version. A wonderful substitution and almost better than actual fireworks except the whole setting things on fire aspect.
