The Week That Was
No, seriously though, how the hell did Jimmy Fallon get The Roots to be his house band? Carson Daly must be pissed (...about sucking so bad at hosting his suck-fest of a show)
Friday: Let’s be honest with ourselves. “Paper Planes” probably won’t win a Grammy. But hey, it’s an honor just to be nominated, right? Ha! Thank God M.I.A. doesn’t have to comfort herself with that kind of loser speak. Why? Because even if she doesn’t win for her hit song, she’s kind of getting the bigger prize in the end—her kid. Yup, M.I.A.’s little bundle of joy is due on the same night as the award show. Who wants to bet that if she does win, she’s naming that kid Grammy? Here’s hoping.
Saturday: Heath Ledger was awarded the AFI (Australian Film Institute) international award for Best Actor for his final role as The Joker. His sister Kate accepted the award, along with Ledger’s parents, and dedicated it to his daughter Matilda.
Sunday: Alright, I’m eating my words about Four Christmases and how crappy it must be. It topped the box office earnings again this week, taking in $18.2 million. That brings its two-week total to $70.8 million. Egad! Remind me to never have a career in box office forecasting.
Monday: “Love Me or Hate Me.” The pint-sized rapper Lady Sovereign never really gave me a chance to make that judgment. She proposed the question, and then sort of fell off the scene entirely. However, she’s releasing a new album on April 7, Jigsaw, so I’ll get to resume my judging soon. Fun fact: it’s being released by Midget Records. (Snicker).
Tuesday: I haven’t heard much about how Jimmy Fallon plans to fill Conan O’Brien’s hilariously large shoes when he takes over “Late Night” next year. Here’s one tidbit, though—The Roots will serve as Fallon’s house band. Hmm…is this a downgrade for The Roots? Only time will tell, I guess.
Even though I only liked one song of theirs—you know, that “Woo-hoo!” song—I guess it’s pretty cool that Blur is reuniting. They’ll perform in London’s Hyde Park on July 3, 2009, which will be their first public appearance since 2000.
Wednesday: If you’re dying to hear more from PJ Harvey, your wish is her command. Seriously, her new album debuts on March 30. Entitled A Woman A Man Walked By, it’s a collaboration with John Parish. So, that means that it’s going to be good.
Thursday: OMG, Golden Globe nominations. No real surprises here—except that Jennifer Aniston will have to sit through yet ANOTHER reminder of just how fantastic and amazing Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are now that they are together and unstoppable. He was nominated for Best Actor in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and she was nominated for Best Actress in The Changeling. In other news, they’ll arrive at the ceremony by unicorn. Best Dramatic Film nominations include Revolutionary Road, Frost/Nixon, Slumdog Millionaire, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and The Reader.
Quick news about The Decemberists’ rock opera, Hazards of Love. Release date: March 24. Get ready for its 17-track goodness.
