The Break Up Mixtape Part Two

Heartache always deserves a sequel.

I greatly appreciated the outpouring of song selections for getting dumped by you fine readers. I added a little of The Smiths in there, and you were right. It did help my sad tear stained self. Music and lyrics emulate life, so as you can guess I have recently been hurt by a former significant person, and having readers share some of their cathartic songs made the beast of burden a lot easier to bear. Well, I'm now at the point where you realize you deserve better, the point where I can really believe that I'll get over him and move on, and thankfully I've found some songs for that place in life too. Here is some of my favorite "you're better off without them" songs, the moving on songs, or the songs that make you realize sometimes endings aren't always so bad.

Ben Folds Five - Song for the Dumped - Scream out "Fuck You Too!" with Ben. Surprisingly you’ll feel a whole lot better about the current situation.

Alanis Morissette - You Oughta Know - Every girl I know at some point has sang this song about a boy who has done them wrong. Granted it's not as effective now since I know it could have been written about Uncle Joey from “Full House”, but still it's a great "go to hell" type of break up song.

The Dresden Dolls – Backstabber - Another great chorus to sing along with. That is the cornerstone in songs to help you get past having your heart broken. Amanda Palmer really makes you believe every word she says as she spits so much venom when she belts out the word backstabber.

Weezer - Why Bother - Weezer front man Rivers Cuomo could be the poster child for awkward heart ache. Thankfully the rest of us have him around to pen lyrics to those painful awful feelings that everyone has.

Lily Allen – Shame For You - Here's a great song when you realize that you are better off without that total jerk that just exited your life. It's snarky, sarcastic and very empowering - something everyone needs to get back into feeling like their awesome self.

The Dandy Warhols - We Use to be Friends - With a line like "a long time ago, we use to be friends" you'll be moving on in no time.

Sloan - Believe in Me - This song is uplifting no matter what the situation is. It's the musical equivalent of having someone pat you on the back and say, "You can do it!" It's the type of song that picks your life back up again. Sometimes you need an underappreciated Canadian rock band to do just that.

The Thermals - Pillar of Salt - This song is another one of my favorite “get empowered” tunes. The driving beat and earnest pleading vocals make me feel alive while reminding me that tomorrow will be another day.
