The Week That Was

Girl Talk plans Apocalypse, the Choke soundtrack and some sad deaths.

Friday: In the most unlikely of paternal news, Clay Aiken became a baby daddy today! Parker Foster Aiken was born to the American Idol crooner and his BFF/in vitro receiver, record producer Jaymes Foster. Come on kids; let’s muster up an “aww” for this kooky pairing. No? Alright, I tried.

Saturday: I don’t want to get pseudo-philosophical about the circle of life, and a time for every season, but unfortunately, just as we greet a new life, we say goodbye to another one. Comedian and actor Bernie Mac passed away today at the age of 50. He had been suffering from pneumonia, but also had sarcoidosis, an immune-system disorder, which contributed to his death. Mac leaves a stellar legacy, including his work as one of the original Kings of Comedy. R.I.P., Bernie.

Sunday: When I saw this headline, I thought that there was no way that two talented men had passed away in the same weekend. Unfortunately, that’s the case. Soul legend Issac Hayes was found unresponsive near a treadmill in his home, and was pronounced dead. He was 65. Hayes made waves with his music, as well as with his role of Chef on South Park. He too will be sorely missed.

Monday: Let’s get some good news, shall we? Well, this may concern the apocalypse, but it also concerns Girl Talk. Personally, if I’ve got to leave the world in a fiery inferno, you better believe that I’m going to dance my flaming ass off to those mash-ups. Anywho, according to MTV.com, Girl Talk is planning an epic, 24-hour long concert on December 12, 2012. If you believe the Mayans (which I totally do), this date is when the world is going to end. So, clear your calendar if you want to be grinding with strangers when the world ends. You know where you need to be. Actually, there’s no word on where exactly it will be, but it’ll probably happen in a volcano somewhere.

Also, in less epic concert news, Tegan and Sara will be coming to the Riviera on October 9. Still pretty cool.

Tuesday: There were oodles of buzz over the soundtrack for the upcoming film Choke, based off the book of the same name by Chuck Palahniuk. Palahniuk claimed that Radiohead had written a song for the end credits, and produced ambient tracks for a majority of the film. LIES! Turns out, the song that Radiohead wrote for the end credits is a little ditty called “Reckoner,” and that’s their only contribution to the score. Well, the soundtrack is still shaping up to be pretty decent, with songs from Death Cab for Cutie, Buzzcocks and The Natural History.

Heading to University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana on October 12? Be sure to stop by Assembly Hall and check out Death Cab for Cutie, who will be gracing the stage that evening.

Wednesday: Oh, Christ. Britney Spears gave OK! magazine an interview to mark her ninth comeback in two years, or something like that. Update: she totally loves her kids now that she doesn’t have to take care of them all that much, she thinks her sister is a whore for getting pregnant so young, but still thinks the baby is cool, and her new album will be released in the next nine months! She’s writing songs on her piano, y’all. Personally, I can’t WAIT until she’s back in the spotlight. It’s been what, a month? Way too long, Brit Brit.

Thursday: If you needed any more encouragement to buy albums rather than just download/steal them, Of Montreal is more than happy to give you that. Their upcoming release, Skeletal Lamping, will come in several formats. When you buy the CD or vinyl, you can choose from a t-shirt (yawn), paper lantern (SO COOL), or wall decals (fairly bitchin’). Other options are available, so when October 7 comes around, be sure to choose the kookiest one you can. Remember, they’ll also be at the Riviera on October 27.
