The Week That Was

Minnie Me is rocking out with a sex tape, Girl Talk goes on tour, and if you're an offbeat, late 70's British punk star who also happens to be dead, make sure to watch the fuck out for your stuff.

Friday: First, you've got Mike Myers in a last-ditch effort to revive his acting career with The Love Guru. Now, you've got Verne Troyer -- Myers' faithful sidekick in Austin Powers 2 and 3 -- with a sex tape. It may not be in wide release, like The Love Guru, and he may be suing TMZ.com for $20 million, but still. While I'm not sure which one would be worse to watch, I find myself feeling quite bad for these two guys. They used to be talented! Mike Myers had his whole Wayne's World franchise, and Verne Troyer starred in The Wacky Adventures of Ronald McDonald: Scared Silly, as a sundae. Please, boys. Either stick with the SNL skits and fast food promos, or don't do anything at all.

Saturday: If you're one of the people that agreed with Ryan Peters' hatred of Aerosmith in last week's Roundtable, then you won't be happy about this. Activision, the makers of Guitar Hero, decided to release a new incarnation of this beloved game. What is it? Guitar Hero: Aerosmith. That's right. You get a guitar with their logo emblazoned on it, along with 30-odd songs to bang your buttons to. The only good thing that has come from this news is the phrase "bang some buttons." Perhaps I can commission Steven Tyler to sing about it...

Sunday: While I'd like to wax philosophic about the political message behind a film like Wall-E, I can't say much about it besides "OH MY GOD HOW CUTE IS THAT ROBOT?" Seriously. I left the theatre, and all I could say in response to anything was "aww...", or a variety of beeps and boops. Needless to say, tons of people agreed with me, since Wall-E made $63.1 million this weekend. Suck it, Angelina Jolie and your bendable bullets!

Monday: In random casting news, Helena Bonham Carter is in talks to join the cast of Terminator: Salvation in a "small, but pivotal" role. I hope this small, pivotal role involves her haunting all of the other characters, dressed in dramatic costumes with a crazy bird-nest hairdo and kooky make-up. Because really, whether or not that fits with the whole Terminator schema, I can't imagine her doing much else.

Tuesday: Still dancing your life away to Girl Talk's latest release? Excellent. Because here comes the tour information! Obviously, he's going to be performing on Sunday, August 3 at Lollapalooza, but he'll also be visiting Milwaukee on November 4, and partying with U of I kids in Urbana on November 5. Should be good, clean fun for the whole family!

Wednesday: The highly anticipated Of Montreal album, Skeletal Lamping, will be released on October 7. Here's an odd news bit to accompany that -- Ian Curtis of Joy Division's gravestone was stolen sometime last night, according to BBC. Even if you're a super fan, that's a pretty low thing to do. Have some respect.

Thursday: More movie news -- if you're a fan of Sasha Baron Cohen (Borat), Will Ferrell (a string of unfunny characters), and detective dramas, then today's your day! Cohen and Ferrell will star as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, respectively, in a remake of the classic story. Word on the street is that Judd Apatow is one of the producers. This will be one of those movies where you either grit your teeth and pray for the end, or guffaw the whole way through. We'll see.
