People still buy albums, and HEAVE breaks down the numbers
We live in dark times, friends. The prospects of war, terrorism, recession and electoral upheaval have rendered the world a scary, incoherent mess of post-modern angst. Unless, of course, you're Josh Groban; and then it's been a pretty damn good year. Sure, your new album, Noel, hovered in the middle of the charts for a few weeks, but after your ole' pal Oprah took the time to promote it on her show it has shot to the top spot for the past four weeks. And with the 669,000 copies it moved this week, Noel has now totaled 2.77 million units sold, making it the best-selling album of the year. Man, 50 Cent is going to be pissed at you.
Way back in the number two spot this week was Alicia Keys, who upped her sales 24% from last week to 292,000 copies of As I Am. The Eagles have held on strong with Long Road Out of Eden, selling 241,000 and securing the third spot. Despite only selling the album at Walmart, The Eagles have managed to remain a force in the market. Pushing 191,000 copies, Now 26 grabbed the fourth spot for the third week, while Mannheim Steamroller's Christmas Songs capitalized on the holiday spirit in route to 180,000 and the fifth spot.
Just behind the Christmas crooners were those wacky-ass High School Musical 2 kids, who sold 178,000 copies of their soundtrack. And not far behind them was Hannah Montana / Miley Cyrus, another Disney Channel favorite, who pushed 177,000 units of the Hannah Montana 2 soundtrack. Taylor Swift moved up to the 8th spot with 139,000 copies of his self-titled debut, while chart mainstay Carrie Underwood rattled off another 138,000 copies of Carnival Ride. Garth Brooks rounded out the top ten with his new best-of collection, which managed to sell 119,000 despite an absence of alter-ego / crime fighter Chris Gaines.
