Record Numbers
People still buy albums, and HEAVE breaks down the numbers.
Content to battle for the two top spots, Alicia Keys’ As I Am and the Juno soundtrack flip-flopped chart positions for the second time in as many weeks. After finishing a close second last week, As I Am boosted its sales 3% this week to 61,000 copies and reclaimed the chart throne. The Juno soundtrack dropped 15% to 55,000 and the runner-up slot.
Despite only selling 54,000 copies, The Mars Volta’s The Bedlam in Goliath grabbed the third spot on the charts, making it the band’s best charting album to date. Both the band’s 2005 release Francis the Mute, and 2006’s Amputechture sold more copies in their first weeks, but neither placed as high as third on the album charts. Rock favorites Bullet for My Valentine had their best sales week with the debut of Scream Aim Fire, which pushed 53,000 copies and landed at number four. Not far behind in the fifth spot was the Grammy Nominees 2008 compilation, with 50,000 copies.Despite falling two spots to number sixth, Mary J. Blige continues to be a chart force with Growing Pains selling another 47,000 copies, a 4% increase from last week. Miley Cirus moved up in the charts with the Hannah Montana 2: Non-stop Dance Party soundtrack, which debuted with 40,000 in sales in the seventh spot. The sales bump comes on the heels of the release of the Best of Both Worlds concert film that Disney released to great results this weekend in IMAX theatres. Keyshia Cole’s Just Like You also performed well this week, bumping its sales 17% to 36,000 copies and the number eight spot.
Taylor Swift’s self-titled debuted continued its strong chart run in the ninth slot, with just under 36,000 copies. Unhappy with only one charting album and the number one movie in the country, Miley Cirus also laid claim to the tenth spot on the charts with the Hannah Montana 2 / Meet Miley Cirus double-disc goliath, which managed to sell another 35,000 copies. If pre-teen girls were eligible to vote, Cirus would likely have captured both the Republican and Democratic primary nominations on Super Tuesday.
