Think all the way back to the year 2004, when Kelly Clarkson jumped and faux-moshed her way into America’s collective heart, telling some low-down bastard that she’s been better since he’s been gone. You remember that, right? At the time, it seemed like Clarkson was poised to become the only legitimately successful “American Idol? alumni, what with Ruben Studdard and Taylor Hicks hard at work entertaining the crowds at Danbury Fair.
That, of course, was before Clarkson angered God himself by trying to claim ownership of the month of December, and before Carrie Underwood came along and began to steal every last bit of Clarkson’s throne. Underwood completed the process this week, when her album Carnival Ride landed at number one on the charts with massive sales of 527,101 discs. Experts are predicting that at least 350,000 of those sold copies can be attributed to the fact that Underwood is a total babe. She’s like King Midas, only with better cleavage.
Underwood’s nearest competition was Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, who moved a little over 100,000 copies of their collaboration Raising Sand. Meanwhile, System of a Down front man Serj Tankian has to be happy with the debut of his first solo album Elect the Dead, which dropped at number four with 65,998 albums sold. Further down on the list were Coheed and Cambria at number six with 61,849 copies of No World for Tomorrow.
The rest of the chart was made up of standbys from the last few weeks. Next week should be really interesting when we’re all transported back to 1999, as Britney Spears and the re-formed Backstreet Boys both released albums this week. I’m getting out my Jnco jeans in preparation.
