News for Now

Let's reminisce about the weekend, shall we?

How terrible is this? There have been so many Michael Jackson specials, concerts, exclusive interviews, and general sound bytes for the past week that I had to go to his Wikipedia page just so I could figure out when he actually died. It turns out that he passed on June 25, last Friday. I hope you all raised a sequined hand at some point during that day.

Though nothing you do to honor MJ could ever measure up to the tribute he got at the BET Awards on Sunday. Chris Brown cried while singing “Man in the Mirror”! And danced to “Billie Jean”! And promised to not let fans down (again) while accepting the AOL Fan-Demonium Trophy! So now, America has totally forgiven him for that…violent thing he did awhile back. But can we talk for a second about that award? That’s the worst fake award name EVER. Why not just call it the AOL Time-Filler Trophy for Troubled Stars Seeking Redemption? Way catchier.

And while we’re on the subject of Michael, let’s turn out attention to toys and movies about them. Toy Story 3, which in my mind is Pixar’s greatest achievement yet, grossed $59 million this weekend, triumphing over Grown-Ups ($41 million) and Knight and Day ($20.5 million). Can I start the countdown to Inception yet? I can’t wait to watch Joseph Gordon-Levitt rehash the Matrix fight scene in what looks like a hotel lobby. I’m serious. 18 days
