Chiddy Bang Provides First Listen From Upcoming 'The Preview'

Pharrell adds star-power; provides a hand in production

The following is the short version of Chiddy Bang’s recent situation. Chiddy’s debut album The Swelly Life, originally scheduled for release Fall 2010, gets pushed to early 2011.  In response, the 19-year-olds assure an eight-track EP (The Preview) to let listeners preview (ha, get it?) the direction they’re headed for their first LP. Promised on said EP involves Chiddy Bang’s already finished work sampling MGMT, Passion Pit and Sufjan Stevens. Cool, those are awesome songs. New works promised: a Xanphoon Jones/Pharrell produced “All Things Go” and a Q-Tip meets dubstep slice entitled “Here We Go” leaving three tracks left unnamed.

Recently, Chiddy finished that Jones/Pharrell joint and now you can listen to it. We’ve given it a few spins and can say that the transitions are just swell. The beat does feel like if it were playing in the background of your life, it must be pretty good. However, Chiddy usual has more energy than this when he lays out his verses. Consider us a bit underwhelmed, perhaps the excitement of working with someone like Skateboard P left these teenagers a bit star struck. There’s still value in the piece, but we wouldn’t mind if a redux were done so Chiddy could better use the beats placed before him.

Either way, the fact that Chiddy Bang was so quick at release “The Good Life” after announcing The Swelly Life’s delay is a message of good faith. It gives us hope that their scheduled plan to release The Preview October 12 and their LP early 2011 will go as planned. However, the lack of vigor in Chiddy’s vocal delivery on “The Good Life” means that the duo must return to form when they decide to leak their Q-Tip collab. Anyways, it still is worthwhile to listen to “The Good Life” below and let your mind weigh in on its value to Chiddy Bang EP project.

Right now Chiddy Bang is busy on world tour spreading their sound. For all you Chicago readers, you can check them out at The Congress Theatre September 17, just remember to buy us a couple tickets, too. For other dates, check Chiddy Bang’s Myspace page.
