The Week That Was

"Iron Man 2" won the weekend box office for the second week, powered entirely by ScarJo's heaving cleavage.

Friday: Daaaang. The Cure sure is hip with these e-times of ours. Y’all probably know that they’re reissuing Disintegration on June 8, complete with 20 rarities and a full live album. However, did you also know that they’re streaming 20 additional rarities on the reissue’s website? OK, not to be all picky about language, but once you have more than 30 of any given thing, doesn’t that take it out of the running for the “rare” classification? Discuss.

Saturday: I love Panda Bear. Sometimes, I like Panda Bear more than I like Animal Collective. This sends me into a tailspin of emotional questioning, and the only way I can pull myself out of it is by planning a trip to the zoo. You too? Awesome! Anyway, PB has a new single, “Tomboy”, coming out on July 13. As our good friends (or mortal enemies, you decide) at Amazon say, this will be “the first in a series of limited edition seven inch singles" to be released on different labels.” Cool, right? Right. Look for Tomboy (the album) in September.

Sunday: So, Iron Man 2 is tops at the box office again this weekend. Robin Hood made a decent showing at $37.1 million, though you can totally tell from previews of the movie that Russell Crowe hasn’t quite given up his belief that if he just SCREAAMMMSSS on a BATTLEFIELDDDDD enough times, people will see his movies. So I imagine these 2nd-place numbers will have him a-yellin’.

Monday: OMGOMGOMGOMGOMG. Remember how last week I was all, “bitches, it’s mah birthday on May 17th! I should ask for Dirty South Dance 2!” I DON’T EVEN HAVE TO ASK. I CAN DOWNLOAD THAT SHIT RIGHT NOW. I love you, A-Trak.

In “dream tours 2010” news, we’ve got Vampire Weekend, Beach House, and Dum Dum Girls all gettin’ together. Do I feel like those bands all go together, sonically speaking? Not at all. But that doesn’t mean I’m not excited! Check ‘em out beginning in late August through late September.

Tuesday: Today is the 30th anniversary of Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis’ suicide. While you’re listening to “Isolation” on repeat, British schoolchildren have taken it upon themselves (well, with the Northern Chamber Orchestra) to compose a symphony based on three Joy Division songs.

Wednesday: ISIS, a metal band that everyone should at least be familiar with, has broken up. According to the band, it’s not out of bitterness or anything negative, but “simply put, ISIS has done everything we wanted to do, said everything we wanted to say. In the interest of preserving the love we have of this band, for each other, for the music made and for all the people who have continually supported us, it is time to bring it to a close.” What a nice, professional conclusion to come to. They kick off their final tour on May 26, and their last show will be on June 23 in Montreal.

Thursday: Alright. I hate the new Goldfrapp album. It sounds like I’m at the world’s shittiest roller disco, and I didn’t think that “shittiest” and “roller disco” could EVER exist in the same sentence. That being said, I guess I have to give Alison Goldfrapp the tiniest bit of credit after watching her video for “Alive.” While I’m hating this latest incarnation of her sound, I am LOVING the fact that she’s hanging out with vampires and still finding time to wear a shiny gold cape/pantsuit thing. It’s basically what I wish I could do every day.
