The Week That Was

Trent Reznor is taking on trolls, people keep going crazy at summer festivals,, oh and in a bit of underreported news that most people probably didn't hear about, Micahel Jackson died.

Friday: There may be people fighting for their human rights over in Iran, but Trent Reznor is fighting for what really matters: the right to tweet. You may remember that Reznor claimed (only about a week ago) that he was giving up social networking sites. Well, it looks like you can take the Twitter out of the boy, but you can’t take the boy out of Twitter. That doesn’t sound correct, but roll with me for a moment. In an epic display of assertive power—nay, patriotism—Reznor stated “Fuck you, trolls, I’ll tweet if I feel like it…[my fiancé] and I are an unstoppable force of greatness—so SUCK it.” Yes we can!

Saturday: Yay! Islands is coming out with a new album! What’s worth exclaiming even more is the fact that Jamie Thompson, fellow former Unicorn has rejoined the group! He recorded Return to the Sea, but was absent on Arm’s Way. Look for it on September 22.

Sunday: Cory may have cautioned everyone against seeing The Proposal, but apparently, the world wasn’t listening. It took the top spot at the box office this weekend with $33.6 million.

Monday: Here’s the thing: I love me some Crystal Castles. I’m a big fan of the fact that whenever I listen to them, I feel like I’m in a skanky club, about to have a seizure before getting drugged. However, I’m getting a lil’ sick of their antics, especially those courtesy of the tempestuous Alice Glass. Miss Glass isn’t know to be stable—she was a drug-addled runaway by the time she was 16, or so Wikipedia says, so a touch of crazy is expected and very “rock star” of her. But, this is getting out of hand. First, they had a scuffle in Texas when their kick-drum wasn’t top notch, and they refused to go on stage. Barcelona is their most recent victim.

At the Sonar Festival there, their sound was apparently fucked up. So, Glass decided to fuck up some shit, tearing apart the CC drumkit and throwing it at security guards. Then, when they tried to restrain her, she threw a punch at the guard. What a feisty little thing she is.

Tuesday: Sometimes, you need to break up just so you can remember how good making up feels. Sunny Day Real Estate takes that maxim pretty seriously. After their second break-up, they’ve decided to reunite once more, complete with a tour and reissues of their 1994 debut album Diary and the follow-up LP2. Tour dates begin on September 17.

Oh no! Dirty Projectors got in an auto accident on their way to Toronto—their van flipped over outside of Detroit. The good news: all members have been safely discharged from the hospital. However, they’ve retuned to New York for some much-needed R&R, so their Toronto and Montreal shows have been cancelled. No word on whether or not those shows will be rescheduled.

Wednesday: Can’t get enough of Bon Iver? Then prepare yourself for Justin Vernon’s side project, Volcano Choir. It’s a collaboration with Collections of Colonies of Bees, some fellow Wisconsinites. Check it out come September 22.

Because of the shitty economy, one festival casualty was the Virgin Mobile Fest. Get happy though, because it’s back on! With a few changes, of course. It’ll happen on August 30, and it will be only one day instead of three. Also, you’ll find it at the Merriweather Post Pavillion in Baltimore, rather than the larger Pimlico Race Course. Oh, and it’s free. There’s no info on the ticket distributing system just yet, but I’ll pass it along when it becomes available.

Thursday: Today is a truly sad day for the pop culture world, which has lost two irreplaceable icons. Farrah Fawcett died from a long battle with cancer at the age of 62, and the veritable King of Pop, Michael Jackson, was found dead in his home this morning. He was 50 years old. Not many details right now on the cause of death, but several reports claim it was cardiac arrest. Let’s remember the best of them, shall we?
