Heart of My Own adds a second album to Basia Bulat’s discography.  As demonstrated in her 2007 album, Oh, My Darling, Bulat has a very quirky voice.  Her strong folk musical style certainly isn’t for everyone, but I enjoy that about her. Helping a strong start in the New Year for Rough Trade.

The album starts out strong with “Go On.”  Basia Bulat’s use of diverse instruments such as the guitar, autoharp and hammered dulcimer paired with her strikingly unique voice make the song a good way to start the album.  There’s nothing worse than picking up a new album, only to wait a few songs until it really picks up.

Following this track, comes “Run,” which goes at a slower pace, yet still moves the album along. The chorus provides excitement and energy surrounded by the medium-paced, folksy verses.  This is appropriate given the song title; you can almost visualize someone running.

“Gold Rush” is a track that she has available for download through her website.  I can see why she picked this song to promote the album.  It takes you on a musical roller coaster; her voice reaches highs and lows.  There is enough happening to make almost anyone want to hear more of Bulat. Like “Go On,” there is a good representation of her instrumentals.

I would recommend anyone who enjoyed her previous album to pick it up.  Although at times, it did drag on a bit.  The end seemed like it was from a different album than the first half.  Also, there were no tracks that seemed to outdo tracks like “Snakes and Ladders,” from her first album.

High Point

This album provides strong examples of Bulat’s musical capabilities.

Low Point

There seemed to be disconnect between the first half and the second half of the album.
