Vs. The Great American City

Maybe it’s just me, but do you ever find yourself searching for that album that can sooth and refresh you by just listening to it? Luckily enough for me I stumbled upon Rodeo Ruby Love’s latest album Vs. The Great American Cities. This album is a triumphant collection of poppy, indie/folk goodness. Originally started as a side project for Zachery Melton, Rodeo Ruby Love, which hails from Marion Indiana, will bring back summertime memories of simple rock n’ roll with their songs of love and adventure.
The band’s eight members add diversity to the tracks on the album, where guitar, various percussion, strings, keys and even ukulele can all be heard. Vs. The Great American Cities starts strong with the track “Shhh..” Thoughtful lyrics and a flowing rhythm make this one of my favorite tracks on the album. I wouldn’t exactly call this track catchy, but I do find myself singing along (or trying to) at times. The vocals in this song, done by Zachery and Annie Melton, are beautifully blended - and not to be openly attempted by such amateurs as myself.
“Quit!,” the album’s next song, gives us a taste of varied vocals and more fun musical escapades. “A Small House in the City” also makes for exciting music, with the male/female vocal combination locking this one as well. There also appears to be a helping hand from a couple of horns added into the mix this time.
I knew the fun had to come to an end soon, however. Several of the other songs on the album take a more somber and depressed feel, expressed though heartfelt lyrics. “Don’t Go” tells the story of what I can only assume is a loved one leaving. It portrays powerful feeling through sad words, and while it has a gloomy beginning, the music lightens up and is a joy to hear. The blue mood continues on the track “Black and White.” This song would have to be my favorite on the album; it features wondrous lyrics and soothing music to accompany them.
Rodeo Ruby Love has struck a chord somewhere in me and I can’t seem to give this album a rest. With every listen you’ll finish feeling content and excited. It should also be said that Rodeo Ruby Love has a fine live show which will definitely do justice to the new album.
High Point: I find all of the lyrics and tones of the album very relatable and relaxing.
Low Point: There aren’t too many things to knit-pick about with this album, it keeps good music and energy going throughout.
Quick Point: Several of the members of this band are also members of Away With Vega, which I would fully recommend giving a listen to.
