We Were The States Gets Raw.

Comparisons will be drawn to the Strokes and Jet, but it may not ruin them.

The liner notes state that We Were The States tracked everything in two weeks time, and the resulting collection of songs benefit from the Spartan studio schedule. These guys plug straight into the amps and rip, and they groove pretty hard. The material on Believe the Thieves swings and snarls with a subtle rawness even on the mellower stuff (check out “Girl, You’re Not a Thief” with the tasty Hammond B-3 organ). Fuzzed-out angular guitar, a smoking rhythm section and a dynamic singer make for a winning formula.

We Were The States list The Kinks and Oasis among their musical influences, but I’m also hearing Wire in the lead track, “Up Your Sleeve,” and the Buzzcocks on “Hard.” I’m sure that some might lump this in with contemporaries like The Strokes or Jet. Though sonically similar to those bands, the songs here are stronger. Singer Justin Webb will elicit comparisons to the Strokes’ Julian Casablancas, but We Were The States have material here that will stand on its own.
