Comparing a new album to a band’s old album is usually lazy and pointless. That being said, I need to mention something about British Sea Power’s first album. The Decline of British Sea Power was hailed as an amazing debut by (and I usually wouldn’t say everyone) everyone. I was never able to align myself with this praising position. That album felt chaotic and thrown together. Not sloppy, just extremely varied. I liked some songs, but on the whole, it didn’t work for me. The reason I mention this is because I’m pretty sure I wasn’t alone. No one likes to be the person who doesn’t “get” the latest buzz band. If you have been turned off by earlier British Sea Power, I beg you to give Do You Like Rock Music? a chance. I already know I will be listening to this one all year.

This month I’ve found myself gravitating back to the album again and again. It’s catchier than the band’s previous output, and it flows well as any album. This kind of progress caught me completely off guard. It knocked the wind from my asthmatic lungs. Even the dramatic, noisy, feedback, chanting style of “We Close Our Eyes” does not get boring, and it’s over eight minutes long. If you will only listen to one song off the album, check out track two "Lights Out For Darker Skies." Kudos to the band for delicately straddling the line between sounding completely mainstream all while retaining a unique and interesting sound. To describe the album in two words: Top Notch.
