Sometimes music is serendipitous. It's fate that a person's ears touch upon the melody of a band and their songs. Such is the case with myself, the band Ida, and their new release, Lovers Prayers.

Ida is a band from New York City who make incredibly subtle and quiet music. Lovers Prayers is a gentle and nurturing album that can calm the listener even when they are set in the middle of a world of chaos, a world like Ida's home. Why do I need this type of music so desperately? Well, with only a few weeks notice, I have up and moved to Ida's fair city. It was a sudden decision, but be assured I didn't move to escape arrest warrants or because it was fashionable. No, I moved to accept two positions at two record labels so I could really put forth the effort in trying to heal this very hurt industry. I'm even working for free, so I'm either incredibly crazy or incredibly devoted to this damned industry (or maybe both).

So as I've found myself alone in a new strange world, I've retreated back to the defense mechanism of my younger days; submersing myself in music. Ida's new release happened to fall into my lap. As I slip on my headphones walking the streets of Chelsea, all noise vanishes. The street vendors, the taxi horns, the rich women with their little teacup dogs, all drift away. I turn Ida's incredibly soft and simple music all the way up, and for the first time in this strange new world, I feel familiar and safe. Husband and wife Daniel Littleton and Elizabeth Mitchell vocals contrast and blend with each other in perfect unison. With just the right amount of instrumentation, including some very beautiful and poignant string parts, Lovers Prayers has the most peaceful and serene sound. The whole album is just a perfect soundtrack for a solitary day, best experienced being silent and just taking in the world as you listen.

As I walk through the doors of my monotonous new desk job, Littleton sings, "Baby this world is broke, I can get so scared," and I smile in recognition, feeling comfort in finding music and lyrics that know just how I feel right now. Knowing that artist like Ida, who make such simple and passionate music are out there making a difference to someone, makes this city seem a little less cruel, and makes it so much easier to go into work everyday to try and fight the good fight for music. It's music like Lovers Prayers that just makes the world seem a little less harsh, and everyone could use that feeling in life.
