Any band that uses coughing as an instrument will always be considered experimental to me. Such is the case with Prints, a duo that sounds much larger than two guys getting together and using their allergies for a musical advantage.

At points they sound like a toned down Battles (“Easy Magic? and “Pretty Tick?) or a very toned down Animal Collective (“Too Much Water? and “Blue Jay?). These four tracks in particular are the four best tracks on the self-titled album, while the remaining four tracks are lacking in anything appealing. “End? seems to be a remix of “In The Air Tonight? by Phil Collins, while “All We Knead? features what I think is a direct rip off from part of the score of “West Side Story.? Another track, “Meditation,? seems to be exactly what the name would imply – it’s Prints meditating.

Lyrically the album is the same mixed bag as it is musically. Some songs show intelligent songwriting, while songs like “Pretty Tick? feature the lyrics “there’s a pretty tick/sucking your blood and shit.?

Such is the case with most albums dubbed as experimental. They either capture something amazing, or they fall flat on their faces. This album goes 50/50 – which makes Prints score a pretty decent album.
