If It's Broken; Don't Fix It.
Kevin Drew and the gang deliver yet another masterpiece.
Broken Social Scene Presents Kev
Spirit If...
Released on Nov 30, -0001
A pretty deceptive title, Broken Social Scene Presents Kevin Drew’s Spirit If… is essentially a BSS album. Kevin Drew is the lead singer of BSS; but these are all “his? songs, Drew just recruited his band, Broken Social Scene, to play on his solo album. Confusing? Totally…but what an album Spirit If… is.The plan is for almost every member of Broken Social Scene to release a “presents? album, meaning we will see one from Leslie Feist (of Feist) and Emily Haines (of Metric), along with quite a few more.
Drew seems to give us a more straightforward approach on Spirit If…. BSS’s popularity has taken off, and Drew seems to be aware of what’s going on around him, as Spirit If... feels almost like a greatest hits album for BSS. None of these songs have been featured on any BSS album; but Spirits spotlights everything Broken Social Scene does well while getting rid of the filler that clutters some of their earlier releases. The only “non song? is a forty-six second interlude entitled “Underneath the Skin.?
Tracks like “Tbtf? will be in your head for days (and will make you feel quite dirty if you sing the chorus to yourself), while “Safety Bricks? and “What You Gonna Be? features everything I like about Broken Social Scene. The harmonies, the lyrics, the strings and the laid back recordings of Kevin Drew and company on Spirit If… are nothing short of amazing. Honestly, there isn't a weak song on Spirit If…. Anybody who has a pulse should have this in their collection.
