When we think of dipping English indie rock band The xx’s debut album xx in a tub chocked full a rhymes about .22’s, coke dealing and Benjamins, a high level of perplexity presents itself. Bay area DJ wait what plays with the curiosity that the concept raises and qualms any questions, delivering The Notorious xx mixtape. Skillfully mixing classic Notorious B.I.G. verses with The xx’s slow, chilling beats. The Notorious xx serves up a wonderful listen on a rainy spring night. When The xx’s singing mixes in, it playful toys with Biggie rapping “I got that good dick girl, you didn’t know?” with The xx’s “Sometimes, I still need you.”
DJ wait wait carefully picks and chooses from Biggie’s library to create 11 near perfect meshes with xx creating titles like “Mo Star Mo Problems” or “Suicidal Fantasies.” In fact, wait what began this project after hearing Biggie’s “Juicy” over The xx’s “VCR” that thankful lead to the production of this inspired mixtape. “Juicy-r” also lead to a mash-up video that can be watched below.
