The Roundtable: TV Theme Songs
What is your favorite TV theme song?
Everyone at HEAVE loves music – but we also love television. So why not combine the two and ask our writers a pretty standard question – what is your favorite theme song from a TV show?
Ben Kessell - A-Team. Hands down, best theme song ever. What other song in existence makes you stand up and salute the TV? Every time I hear the prologue I instinctively pick up my phone to dial... The A-Team. It could only get better if Mr. T remixed it with an insightful rap about being nice to my elders.
Amy Dittmeier - I'd have to say it's a toss-up between Law & Order or Quantum Leap. Both make me want to fight the injuctice of the American system, whether it be in the past, present, or future. Maybe even do it in drag.
Alyssa Vincent - Without a doubt, Full House. To this day, I can still sing the entire song from memory, and it always brings a smile to my face in the way only a song about family values can. Also, I enjoy humming it to myself while pondering the absolute mess that nearly the entire cast of Full House has become since leaving that gorgeous San Francisco condo. Oh, Stephanie Tanner. You just couldn't say no to meth, could you?
Ben Kessell - As awesome as hearing Bob Saget play a non-filthy straight-man was, I still remember the Family Matters and Step By Step themes over Full House. Maybe I didn't have the same attachment to Full House, but maybe that's because it never jumped the shark like the aforementioned shows did. What made Step By Step great was that my mom had me convinced that Suzanne Summers and Patrick Duffy sang the theme song together. They're hammy folk, but I doubt the validity of my mother's wisdom.
Andrew Scott - Say what you will - but I’ll be damned if The Simpsons’ theme song isn’t the best TV show theme song out there. I mean let’s face it, the show is currently in its 21st season and remains a primetime show. Oh, and not only that, but it’s a cartoon. The intro theme won the National Music award for “Favorite TV Theme” in 2002, as well as winning the BMI TV Music award on three different occasions, not to mention being nominated for an Emmy. As soon as that first note rings out, anyone with a pulse can tell you what’s to come. Even just listening to the theme song alone I can picture the animated happenings in my head.
In 2009, the visual element of the opening sequence was reworked for the show’s transition to an HD format, the included a new format and the inclusion of different variations during the opening. Long live The Simpsons!
