New Music from Talib Kweli and Hi Tek
Duo known as Reflection Eternal readies long awaited second album.
Way back in 2000, a whole decade ago, the rap duo Reflection Eternal dropped their first album Train of Thought. The album was well received by the press, but as far as sales go, the fare was not too well. Despite this, the duo that consists of Brooklyn lyricist Talib Kweli and Cleveland beat-maker Hi Tek promised another album following Train of Thought’s release. Guess it takes ten years and three solo albums each to create something on the same level as the first Reflection Eternal LP.
The duo has recently released a mixtape on New Years to create some hype for their sophomore album, Revolutions Per Minute. The mixtape, aptly title RE:Union is mixed by Statik Selektah and features songs old and new alike, providing a nostalgic but fresh listening experience. This also makes it a nice entry point for newcomers to hear what Talib and Hi Tek are about when it comes to hip-hop. Long story short, Talib provides the masterful wordplay while Hi Tek creates the foreground of beats that Talib works with. Past successes “Move Something” and “The Blast” from Train of Thought are included as well two singles “Just Begun” and “Back Again” that will appear on Revolutions Per Minute. Solo material from each artist make their way onto the tape as well.
The first single off the album “Back Again” released last June, beginning the tease of a second album finally coming. Paired with it is a well-produced video that helps create the duality of Reflection Eternal, along with some nice text effects and multiple frame techniques. The album Revelations Per Minute expects to see a spring release, with rumors speculating as early as March. You can download the 30-track mixtape at Year of the Blacksmith and watch the video for “Back Again” below.
