The Week That Was
OH MM GEE. R. Kelly is writing a memoir. I will be severely disappointed if at least 50% isn't dedicated to doo-doo butter and the difficulties of peeing on someone's head with any kind of accuracy.
Friday: WARNING: Shit might
be boring for a few weeks here on The Week that Was. I’m going to
do my best to supply you with all the real news (obviously), but almost
nothing happens in December. Both the secular and religious worlds seem
to shut down. So, in the interim, please excuse the potential excess
of faux news (possibly) and holiday-themed links (definitely).
Shout out to Cat Power for keeping the month interesting so far! While there’s nothing concrete, she is working on a new album that looks—for the moment—to be all Cat, all the time. No Dirty Delta Blues band or anyone else. Ooo…this will be good, whenever it comes out. Until then, if you find yourself in Australia at the end of December/start of January, catch Power with the Dirty Delta Blues band.
Saturday: Guitarist Jack Rose passed away today at the age of 38 after suffering from a heart attack. He was set to release his 10th solo album Luck in the Valley on February 23, 2010. Rest in peace.
Sunday: Man, I spoke too soon
about December being boring. Rivers Cuomo was hospitalized today with
three cracked ribs after Weezer’s tour bus crashed. The remaining
December dates of the Ratitude tour have been cancelled. Cuomo’s wife and two-year-old daughter—who
were also on the bus at the time of the accident—were uninjured.
Monday: I don’t keep my love
for Khaela Maricich secret. I LOVE HER. I think The Blow is amazing.
What makes her even more amazing is her performance art approach to
shows. Over the weekend in Miami at the Pulse Art Fair, she premiered
a Lindsay Lohan-inspired set. She claimed that she had been working
with Lohan on her new album, sang some songs from said collaboration,
read aloud some voicemail messages that were allegedly from Lohan, and
ended with this statement: "Could you imagine Lindsay actually
performing that? Could you get an idea? Now take that image and subtract
it from what I just did. The sum of that is the difference between a
girl like me and a girl like Lindsay." Yeah, this confuses me a
little. But probably just because it’s so genius.
Tuesday: Remember my Zooey Deschanel rant last week? At least we’ve got a release date for Volume 2 by She & Him now. March 23!
Time for ANOTHER memory lane
trip—remember when Justin Vernon (Mr. Bon Iver) did a benefit show
with his old high school jazz band and we all smiled? A Decade with
Duke is now available. Currently, you can only get a physical copy
in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, but it’s available digitally as well.
Wednesday: PavementWatch ‘10
continues! THEY’RE STILL NOT IN AMERICA. But, they’re playing a
Danish festival called Roskilde that’ll take place July 1-4.
I swear, I think I subconsciously chose to major in English just so I’d have the opportunity to name R. Kelly’s memoir. He’s not soliciting recommendations or anything, but you better believe I’m going to offer them. Don’t worry, I’ll find a classy way to include golden showers and “Trapped in the Closet.” It’s coming out in early 2011, which will from now on be known as THE BEST YEAR EVER.
I guess Portishead is making
up for lost time. Even though they just released Third, they
just put out a single called “Chase the Tear” as a benefit for Amnesty
International. Keep those creative juices flowing, kids!
Thursday: Hmm...perhaps I should
put together a HEAVE Holiday Gift Guide? Though I’m not sure anything
that comes after this offering will even begin to measure up. Unsure
of what to get the crazy Flaming Lips fan in your life? Look no further: http://www.flaminglips.com/store/product/silver-trembling-fetus-ornament
Because that is EXACTLY what I want see hanging on my Christmas tree. Also, it doubles as the perfect gift for your anti-abortion activist neighbor
