New Clipse, Snoop Dogg, Gucci Mane and Kid Cudi
Three albums and one video make for a very hip-hoppity week.
A trifecta I’m aware of, but this Tuesday has raised questions of the possibility of a quadfecta. Three new albums dropped December 8th - along with a well-produced video from Kid Cudi’s first album. To begin, Clipse’s third album Till the Casket Drops has finally hit retail after it was first said to launch last summer. With 13 tracks of Pusha T, Malice and mostly Pharrell produced electro-beats, this album was well worth the wait. You can listen to the singles over at Clipse’s official site, and watch the videos for “I’m Good” and “Popular Demand.” The group also has videos for “Doorman” and “Kinda Like a Big Deal” if you’re interested in more Clipse.
If Clipse isn’t your fair, then how about some new Snoop Dogg? Uncle Snoopy’s Malice N Wonderland has dropped and we are impressed. Although not as impressed as we are with Clipse, the track and video pairing for “I Wanna Rock” has our heads bobbing with the hook cycling our brain. Not to be confused with the Twisted Sister song that might have had heads doing the same thing in the 80s. The album launches with Snoop’s son asking about that song he likes to jerk to. Not familiar with jerkin’? Check here for all the glorious details that the New Boyz. Make sure to practice when no one else is home (doubly so if you are white). As a complete album Malice isn’t great, but the singles and a few others are worth it. Maybe his free mixtape might be more fitting for the bankroll, considering it has all the singles save “Pronto” that is probably the weakest of them all.
The third album release of this week features a more crazy fare with Gucci Mane’s second studio album The State Vs. Radric Davis. An album brimming with 20 tracks of “super-stupor wild style” Gucci is famous for. Don’t expect anything deep, just pure no-nonsense fun. If nothing else, the video for “Lemonade” has to help improve the overall appreciation for the under-liked color yellow. Gucci offers an escape from seriousness to instilling a crazy bounce up and down demeanor. After all, the title of track “Kush is my Cologne” says it all.
This brings us to the completion of the quadfecta, everyone’s favorite indie-hip-hop stoner Kid Cudi. If you still can’t escape September’s wonderfully put together debut album from the Kid, then you’re in luck. Along with the three LP’s released the 8th, Cudi launches a video for “Pursuit of Happiness” produced my actor Josh Hartnett. Those unfamiliar to the track should know that Ratatat does the beats and the hook is from MGMT. It’s a track that takes some time to grow on you, but once it does it’s something nice to chill out to. Now with the video addition, expect more champagne popping and a must have spot on everyone’s New Year’s playlist. Watch the Cudi video here.
