We've Got You Covered
The Kooks cover Peter Bjorn and John.
In the last ”We’ve Got You’ve Covered” we looked at Taken by Trees, the new project of former Concretes lead singer Victoria Bergsman. Ironically, Taken By Trees features two thirds of Peter Bjorn and John – the band that released the hit “Young Folks” in 2006. “Young Folks” featured the vocal stylings of Victoria Bergsman. Even more ironically, “Young Folks” is the subject of this week’s “We’ve Got You Covered.” I’m sure there is some sort of Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon game we could play about it all.
“Young Folks” was huge. an> It was second best track of 2006 (according to NME) huge. Featured on movie soundtrack huge (although the movie was 21, and I’m not sure how it would fit into the movie from a storyline standpoint. But then again, my indie rock knowledge in the world of blackjack is sub par at best). The song was so huge that it was chosen as Gossip Girl’s opening theme song. Sexy and rich teenage drama shows are really, at this point in time, as huge as you can get. Not many people knew of Peter Bjorn and John’s existence prior to “Young Folks,” but Writer’s Block was the band’s third album – and obviously the most popular to date.
The Kooks are one of the many bands to try their hand at “Young Folks.” Others whistling the tune include Kanye West, James Blunt and Pete Yorn. The Kooks’ version was included in a special box set that NME released, but The Kooks have been known to cover the song on television shows across the UK.
Probably the closest to the original version out of every cover out there – The Kooks keep the male/female vocal exchange, but drop the whistling.
