The Week That Was
Hey did you know that Clay Aiken is gay? In other news, the grass is green and herpes are bad.
Friday: Just like Jessica Simpson is attempting to revive her career with a country album, Katie Holmes is trying to do the same by going on Broadway in a revival of Arthur Miller’s All My Sons. She made her debut last night, under the watchful eye of Scientology protestors outside the theater and her cyborg husband in the audience. Reviews have been mixed, but the show has failed to have any sold out dates. Not a good sign. Miller must be rolling in his grave right now. There’s no resting in peace when Katie Holmes is cast in one of your plays.
Saturday: Former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and DJ AM suffered severe burns after a jet crash that killed four others. The two are currently working together as TRVSDJ-AM, and were returning from a show in South Carolina. Their plan was headed to California when the accident occurred. Both Barker and DJ AM—whose real name is Adam Goldstein are in critical, but stable condition and are expected to fully recover.
Sunday: At the 3-minute mark of the Emmy Awards, I contemplated turning off the television. At the 5-minute mark, I contemplated murdering each of the horrific hosts. Seriously, if the “highlight” of your “mono-group-logue” is ripping off Heidi Klum’s suit, then you know you’re in deep hosting shit. Anywho, 30 Rock and Mad Men cleaned up nicely, didn’t they?
Monday: Mogwai drummer Martin Bulloch was discharged from the hospital for complications stemming from his heart condition. However, he was advised to return to Scotland for treatment. Like the smart boy is he, Bulloch is taking his doctor’s advice. As a result, Mogwai cancelled the remainder of their tour with Fuck Buttons. Get yourself well, Martin!
Tuesday: Reissue alert! Pavement’s 1997 release Brighten the Corners is getting shined like a new penny by Matador/Domino records for a November 18 (re)debut. What’s included? 2 discs, the remastered original LP, all of the B-sides and loads of unreleased studio and live tracks. Also, since no reissue is complete without a picture book, you’ll get a 62-page one filled with photos and writings from the band.
Oh, and Clay Aiken’s gay, according to the ever-so-subtle People magazine cover: “Yes, I’m Gay.” That doesn’t really deserve its own paragraph, because it’s lumped under the “common sense” umbrella. It includes things like: look both ways before you cross the street. Don’t punch bears and think you’ll come out on top. And finally, if you’re a lady and though that Clay Aiken was singing about you, you’re dumb.
Wednesday: Have you missed Kanye West? I haven’t all that much, but perhaps I’m in the minority. If you’re dying for some new stuff from him, he just pushed up the release of his latest album. Unfortunately, he mentioned this on his blog, which is quite vague. When to expect it? “Sometime in November.” Thanks, Kanye! So thoughtful to keep us in the loop, and so specifically, too.
Thursday: My day is officially made, and it’s only 9:45 in the morning. Since “Miracle Drug” is my go-to dancing song, you can imagine my excitement over hearing details of his new album. It’s called Get Guilty, and it’s due out on January 20. The icing on the LP cake? A cameo from Mates of State. I’m counting down the days.
