Takin' You Back

Elephant Six Collective!

The Elephant Six Collective was a group of bands who played with each other, lived with each other and shared a common ideology about what they wanted to do with their music. Eventually, the collective branched out to become a record label home to many great indie bands. Neutral Milk Hotel, The Apples in Stereo and Of Montreal (they weren’t technically an elephant six band, but they kind of were). Today’s focus is on some of the less known bands from this scene.

Olivia Tremor Control – I Have Been Floated – From 1995 to 2000, OTC released numerous EP’s, some compilations and three stellar albums. “I Have Been Floated” is taken from their final album Black Foliage: Animation Music. Black Foliage contains twenty-seven songs spanning the map with tracks ranging from fifteen seconds to over eleven minutes long. Great arrangements and a theremin to boot - I honestly can’t understand how this band is so overlooked.

The Minders – It’s so Hard – You like sixties style throwback rock, right? I know, who doesn’t? Well, The Minders do a damn good job composing some real pop gems. This song will be stuck in your head all day – I guarantee it. The Minders never really hit it big, but that doesn’t take away from their great song writing skills. “It’s so Hard” is short and sweet; just how I like my articles.

Elf Power – Back to the Web – Elf Power has always teetered in the middle between obscurity and popularity within the indie-rock scene. Eight albums in about thirteen years, with another one is due out this year. Their 2006 album, Back to the Web, was there major label debut released on Rykodisc. It was not exactly critically praised, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
