To The Pixies!
The Pixies are one of the greatest American bands of all time. While I have had many arguments about which of their albums is best/worst, you really can’t go wrong with picking up any of them (including compilations). It may take unfamiliar listeners a while to overcome the abrasiveness of some of the music, but it’s worth it. You will surely be rewarded.
The Pixies - Levitate Me – Taken from their BBC Sessions disc, “Levitate Me” is the best song on their first official release, Come on Pilgrim. Simple, repetitive and catchy; this illustrates what The Pixies were best at doing; mastered even in their early years. On a side note, for the longest time I didn’t own anything with this song on it and I believed Frank Black was singing “Never take me.”
The Pixies – Winterlong – This is a great version of Neil Young’s “Winterlong.” Originally released as a b-side on the “Dig For Fire” single, it reemerged on the Death to the Pixies compilation. Although both CDs are out of print, used copies can be found with relative ease online or at used music stores. Normally, you wouldn’t think of Frank Black’s bizarre, screamy vocals as Neil Young-esque, but he sounds eerily similar to Neil on this cover.
The Pixies – In Heaven (Lady in the Radiator Song) Live – Recorded live from Minneapolis in November of 2004 during their reunion tour. If this one sounds familiar, it’s because it is a song featured in the David Lynch film Eraserhead. In fact, David Lynch actually wrote this song. Obviously sung by Kim Deal, it showcases her terrific voice in even after more than a decade after The Pixies broke up.
