Beach House, Ghostland Observatory and The Hoosiers in this week's YLP.
Beach House – Gila - Blogger-faves, Beach House, return with a song that further develops their melancholy, dreamy sound. Beginning with a muffled drumbeat and picking up with a church style organ, a vaguely delta blues-sounding guitar melody and a repeating piano line, "Gila" slowly eases along with the help of vocalist Victoria Legrand's echoed, but pretty vocals. If you're a fan of their former tour mates, Grizzly Bear, you know what to expect here.

Ghostland Observatory – Dancing On My Grave - Austin, Texas-based Ghostland Observatory crafts a unique brand of dance music that combines producer Thomas Turner's Ladytron-meets-Prince beats and melodies with Freddy Mercury-style vocals, courtesy of singer Aaron Behrens. The Queen factor is especially pumped up in "Dancing On My Grave" with Behrens belting out the lyrics to a dark blend of synthesizer, drums and other bleeps and bloops. The result is a song that wouldn't have been out of place in the 80's, except for the fact that the gentlemen of Ghostland Observatory sound like they're having way too much fun.

The Hoosiers – Goodbye Mr A - This London-based group is a polished pop-rock outfit finely crafting pop songs that blend the finer aspects of 80's Britpop with the sounds of revivalist contemporaries like The Fratellis and Hard-Fi. Driven by piano, guitars, a 1-2 drumbeat and a catchy organ hook, "Goodbye Mr A" offers a sharp critique of a know-it-all with the lines "So busy showing me where I'm wrong/You forgot to switch your feelings on/So, so superior, are you not/You love a little bit but you forgot." If you're expecting songs about Indiana University's basketball team, you might be sorely disappointed for a few seconds, but once the hook sets in, you'll be more than satisfied.
