Atlas Sound, Cut Copy and Glass Candy show off some new music.
Atlas Sound – Recent Bedroom - If you’re familiar with Deerhunter, it’s not hard to imagine what Bradford Cox’s solo effort would sound like. Put Deerhunter’s waves of sound in a slowed down, mellower setting, which combined with Cox’s echoed vocals and ambient sound effects, lull the listener into a trance. The ultimate result comes off as a cross between older Broken Social Scene and Mum, with some Ride thrown in for good measure. With the enchanting, dreamlike quality of the song, it’s not hard to see why the song is called “Recent Bedroom.”

Cut Copy – Lights and Music - I don’t know what’s in the water in Australia, but the land down under sure knows how to party. Melbourne-based Cut Copy keeps the good times rolling with an infectious tune guaranteed to make you move around in delight. With lots of layers of synth, prominent bass and effect-laden vocals, “Lights and Music” strikes the perfect balance between pop song and dance number. “Lights and Music/are on my mind/be my baby/all the time." Okay, so it’s no Hemingway, but the lyrics fit the mood of the song quite well. But then again, if you’re spending more time analyzing the lyrics than dancing, this probably isn’t for you.

Glass Candy – Rolling Down The Hills (Spring Demo) - While I’ve written about Italians Do It Better Records (and the apparent emergence of a new wave of Italo-disco) in a previous column, this duo manages to eclipse a mere shtick and the overall sound of their own label to craft a sleek, sexy groove that sounds a lot more like a lost funk b-side from the mid-70’s than a bunch of fashion-conscious hipsters salvaging an obscure genre. Produced by Johnny Jewel (the same guy who produced The Chromatics) the song’s horns, spacey synthesizers, bass, catchy beat and flange-heavy guitar back up the almost Cocteau Twins-esque vocals into the most perfect jam I’ve heard in a long, long time. Just try not to fall in love with this song – I dare you.
