Limbeck covers MCS, MCS covers Limbeck - it's insanity!
In 2004, Motion City Soundtrack and Limbeck teamed up to release a two song split EP that featured each band covering one of the other's songs. Motion City Soundtrack chose "The Sun Woke the Whole State," while Limbeck went with “Perfect Teeth.” The former was originally a mellow acoustic track that, after the boys from Minnesota got a hold of it, turned into another one of their infectious, synth-driven tracks that makes you want to dance.
It would be safe to assume that changing a slower song like "The Sun Woke the Whole State" into a much faster, lively song would make it lose what makes it so great. This isn't the case here. Justin Pierre's voice maintains some of the same sad, reminiscent quality that Limbeck's Rob MacLean had in the original recording. Motion City Soundtrack's cover may have been the lesser of the two on the EP, but it is still an outstanding effort.
You can call Limbeck a lot of things, and upbeat normally isn't one of them. Motion City Soundtrack could be accused of skipping their Ritalin shipments – while Limbeck has that aura of “California Cool” around them. Limbeck turns "Perfect Teeth" into a laid back track, but the lyrics are so far away from what usually comes out of Limbeck's mouth, so it's particularly mind-boggling when you get down to the logistics of it all.
I'll be honest with you, I didn't hear Motion City's version until I listened to it for this article, and after one listen I knew that I enjoyed Limbeck’s version better - possibly because I enjoy sitting in the shade with friends and talking - not getting punched in the face on a roller coaster.STREAM: Motion City Soundtrack – The Sun Woke The Whole State
