A Cause For Attention

VH1 and indie artists team up for a good cause kid's album.

If you're worried that you won't be able to listen to your favorite bands in the car when your kids get old enough to understand the words, here's a way to work out a compromise with your morals. Anything's better than a Barney sing-a-long, right?

The third installment of the "For the Kids" series is now available for purchase, featuring classic, contemporary and original children's songs performed by an eclectic array of musicians. The Format asks the thought provoking question, "Does your cat have a mustache?" while Anathallo tells kids what to do if they're happy and they know it. Moby, Of Montreal, Mates of State and Barenaked Ladies also appear on the album with a smattering of other surprises.

Adding to your principled enjoyment of children's songs is the fact that a portion of the US proceeds from the album benefit the VH1 Save The Music Foundation. This nonprofit organization has provided nearly 40 million dollars worth of new musical instruments to public schools across the nation. Since 1997, the foundation has "successfully restored and sustained instrumental music programs” in 1,400 public schools across the country, including communities within Memphis, Houston, Chicago, New York, Denver and Milwaukee. Over a million children have been impacted by this specific pledge to help regain focus on the importance of music education.

So, while the CD is for the kids in a multitude of ways, it's also for every music loving parent's sense of responsibility and good will. And as your children croon along with Over the Rhine's original composition, “The Poopsmith Song," you can rest assured that their next favorite word to share with the grandparents will be just “poop”...not another synonym.
