A Cause For Attention

Some bands pick a platform, some tours take a stand – Here’s music news that doesn’t highlight the messenger, just the message.

It's a new year, a new start and a new opportunity to launch some charity work. Is there any more probable way to begin than by mentioning Bono? Most likely not.

The cause-conscious rocker has put his signature and design on a t-shirt to benefit the Conservation Cotton Initiative (CCI), a program run by the Wildlife Conservation Society. To bring the effort full circle, the shirts are being made by eco-ethical company edunLIVE, which was founded by Bono and his wife, Ali Hewson.

The shirt features Bono's rendition of a fish soaring through the moon and stars, with the words "Fish Can Fly..." and his signature. Part of Hard Rock International's Signature Series, started in 1990. The philanthropic endeavor is number 25 of the set, which has also included Green Day, Ozzy Osbourne and Eric Clapton.

Edun shirts are 100% African cotton tees, from growth of the raw material through the manufacturing process. Profits from the signature series design will go to CCI, which helps African farmers by "providing education on proper land management, organic cotton growing techniques, and wildlife conservation."

The program promotes development of eco-friendly cotton farming around high biodiversity areas in Uganda, Zambia and Madagascar. Under CCI, African farmers eliminate the use of inorganic pesticides and fertilizer, hoping to capitalize on market demand for organic goods. At the same time, they effectively reduce the damage of Africa's unique wildlife.

Start out the year with a few new shirts for your wardrobe, and toast to all the good that can be done in 2008. Happy New Year.
