All The Kinks - all the time in this week's TYB.

Why The Kinks, you ask? Why not, I say. They are quite possibly one of the most underrated of all the British invasion bands. Everyone knows tons of songs by The Beatles, The Stones and The Who. What about The Kinks (and don't say You Really Got Me)? Here are some good Kinks songs that have not been featured in any Jolly Rancher commercials.

The Kinks - The Village Green Preservation Society - When Village Green Preservation Society was released, it was a commercial disaster. Today, of course, it's widely recognized as The Kinks best album and one of the greatest albums of all time. This song starts off the record delving into Ray Davies' nostalgia for the "old ways" in England.

The Kinks - Holiday - Muswell Hillbillies came out in 1971 and was quite different from earlier Kinks albums. It could be described as downright vaudevillian. This song is great because it's laid back and interesting. I have to imagine that alt-country bands like The Jayhawks, Uncle Tupelo, and Calexico had to have listened to this one at some point.

The Kinks - Celluloid Heroes - Taken from the uneven, but still good Everybody's In Showbiz, this is a great song that probably never became a hit single because it's over six minutes long. That won't stop me from letting you in on the best song from 1972. If you do not own any Kinks albums, I recommend the two disc The Ultimate Collection which is composed of forty-four essential Kinks songs. It's a great start.
