Across The Pond

Echo and The Bunnymen, Cut Off Your Hands and Bauhaus in the week's Across The Pond

Nick Johnston, frontman for Australia's Cut Off Your Hands, broke his foot this past Thursday in a less than glorious 15 foot balcony jump. The singer received treatment at the Royal Sussex Hospital and is now sporting a plaster cast, which has delayed his return to his native Australia, forcing the cancellation of two gigs. I will refrain from the obvious kangaroo joke.

The untimely death of Joe Strummer in 2002 left many unanswered questions about his life and how he died. In this week's issue of "Independent Magazine," Strummer's widow speaks for the first time about life with Strummer and of a new book to be published featuring lost lyrics and artwork. Lucinda Mellor explains that the discovery was made in a room buried in the depths of the farmhouse she shared with her husband, which she rarely if ever ventured into while he was alive. Mellor, along with Pop Artist Damien Hirst, have compiled the best bits of Strummer's forgotten past for publication later next year.

Things looked so promising a couple years back for goth heroes Bauhaus. After a successful Coachella comeback, the original line-up convened in the studio to record their first new material since 1983. Bauhaus have announced a March 4th release date for their latest studio album, Going Away White. Staying true to the title, Bauhaus are officially going away. Drummer Kevin Haskins elaborates further, "We were getting along really well, but there was an incident that occurred,"Haskins tells Billboard.com, declining to elaborate further. "Some of us just felt that we didn't want to carry on as a working unit." Phone calls to the Bela Legosi estate have yet to be returned in regards to the incident.

Time to cash in on those frequent-flyer miles. Echo and The Bunnymen have announced they will be performing Ocean Rain in its entirety with full orchestra September 16 at London's lavish Royal Albert Hall.

Last minute holiday gift idea for the Anglophile hopefuls in your life! For those of you too young to remember or to those who found themselves swaddled in flannel or Aquanet in the 80's and 90's, Rhino has compiled a a two decade spanning (84-99) box set featuring the finest Brit Pop had to offer. The Brit Box: U.K. Indie, Shoegaze and Brit-Pop Gems of the Last Millennium is a four disc set that boasts tracks from Suede, Jesus and Mary Chain and Kula Shaker to name a few. The special edition version of the box set comes in the form of an old-timey British phone booth priced at $53.99.

This week's "Single of The Week" goes to These New Puritans with their latest single, "Elvis," sure to give you the creepy crawlies!
