Vampire Weekend, The Raveonettes and Black Mountains in this week's YLP.
Vampire Weekend - A Punk - These CMJ/blog-hype sensations prove they've got that special something with "A-Punk." As the title would suggest, the tune starts off with an Operation Ivy-type beat and bass line, while backing a playful guitar riff. The track maintains an upbeat yet refined groove before kicking with in with...flutes? Somehow these Upper West Side boys make it work, especially with vocals reminiscent of The Talking Heads or Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.
Their self-titled full-length will be out on January 19th on XL Recordings.
The Raveonettes - Lust - If the Jesus And Mary Chain backed the Shangri-Las you might come close to imagining the sound of The Raveonettes. Dual male/female vocals drive the slow groove, filled with plenty of 60's surf-style guitar tone and lo-fi synthesized drums. As the song plays, the sexually-charged anthem sweetly and seductively lulls the listener into a Velvet Underground-inspired bliss. "Lust" demonstrates that the band has finally honed their influences and songwriting chops into an irresistible pop swagger.
Lust Lust Lust will be out in the US on February 18th on Vice Records.
Black Mountains - Tyrant - The Vancouver-area rock band is back at it again. "Tyrant" starts out with epic, riff-heavy psychedelic rock, but suddenly stops and switches tempos for a mellow, David Bowie-esque interlude. The track begins to pick back up with female vocals and heavier riffage; until finally building up into a headbang-worthy climax that would make Led Zeppelin proud - only to revert back to finger picked guitars and sweetly sung male/female vocals to round out the track.
