A Cause For Attention

Artists Against Hunger and Poverty release a compilation for a great cause.

This week: World Hunger Year (WHY), and Artists Against Hunger & Poverty - The SERVE2 Compilation

A music collection is not complete without at least a few enjoyable compilation albums.

The holiday season has brought on the usual surge of bands covering Christmas songs (and I happily admit to owning quite a few), but World Hunger Year (WHY) has done something different. This month marked the release of their second round of artists against hunger and poverty on a comp entitled "SERVE2."

While a bit pricey, the eclectic mix is quite the stocking stuffer - and the dollars go directly to a good cause. Songs are new, classic, electric or acoustic, and names of music greats like Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan join Andrew W.K., The Hold Steady, KT Tunstall and more [see end of article for complete track listing].

Founded in 1975, WHY believes that solutions to hunger and poverty can be found at the grassroots level. WHY takes action by forging relationships between organizations which already exist and media, legislators and funding cooperatives that can assist them.

By supporting organizations that build self-reliance, the non-profit organization hopes to advance long-term solutions to hunger and poverty. Examples of sustaining solutions include movements with education and after school programs, increased access to housing and health care and entrepreneurial opportunities, to name just a few.

The twenty-one artists who donated their tracks (most of which are previously unreleased) freed them to WHY as a philanthropic action. All of the net proceeds of compilation sales will benefit their artist-directed program, called "Artists Against Hunger & Poverty."

Working with artists has proven to be a strong point for WHY. In 1999, more than $1.5 million was raised for 225 organizations in concert-related donations alone. Fighting hunger and poverty around the world, one song at a time.
