Takin' You Back goes progressive.
What makes up a progressive rock band? Horns? Eight minute songs? Jazz-like music? Is it just highly technical? These are actually rhetorical questions because I don't have an answer. I simply know what bands are prog, which aren't and which might be. For those of you who are completely unfamiliar with progressive rock - Steely Dan is the most cited example. Rush is said to be prog-rock (although I think I disagree). Listen to these tracks and I guarantee you will have a better understanding of this genre. You probably won't like it, but now you will at least be mildly familiar.
Alan Parsons Project - I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You - Off of their 1977 release, I Robot, this funky piece of progressive rock predated the movie I-Robot and the song Thriller by Michael Jackson. Listen to that bass line, you can't tell me it doesn't sound like it was totally ripped off by the King of Pop. Alan Parsons Project is not hip (not even in an ironic way) and many people think they plain old suck; but they don't. APP is light and bouncy in a non-oompa loompa kind of way.
King Crimson - Cirkus (Live) - Long before crappy rap-metal bands were purposely spelling their song titles wrong King Crimson was starting one of the first prog-rock bands. Influencing bands from Roxy Music to Phish to Tool, these guys were the bees knees. The group had a revolving door of musicians including Greg Lake (who went on to play in the super-group Emerson, Lake and Palmer), Ian McDonald (who helped form Foreigner) and drummer Bill Bruford formerly of Yes and Genesis. Although not everyone wants to listen to Robert Fripp or Adrian Belew solo for five minutes, I certainly do.
Electric Light Orchestra - Turn to Stone - ELO is borderline prog-rock, but they are so good I had to include them. Jeff Lynne is the man. He's the guy you can never remember who was in the Traveling Wilburys with Tom Petty, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, and Bob Dylan. Willie Nelson is still pissed at Jeff Lynne for getting the call before him. Anyway, ELO is a terrific band who is more pop inspired than many progressive rock bands.
