A small taste of new music. The Mary Onettes, Joe Lally and The Octopus Project on this week's YLP.
The Mary Onettes "Slow" Swedish four-piece, The Mary Onettes, sound like a late 80's mixtape - but in the very best kind of way. Lush, layered synthesizer arrangements, echoed vocals, reverbed drums and the songs' overall recording quality reflect everyone from the Cure to Joy Division to The Smiths. "Slow" in particular, channels the best of the 80's, with singer Philip Ekstrom's Robert Smith-esque vocals ("It's only you tonight/Let's stay out here for a thousand years") and a New Order-style backing beat. If anything, The Mary Onettes prove that the 80's are still alive and well?n Scandinavia.
Their self-titled release is out now on Labrador Records.
Joe Lally "Tonight At Ten" While Fugazi has become a near-legendary band to most music fans, Joe Lally's solo record, Nothing Is Underrated proves that band, is in fact, the sum of its parts. Lally's pleasant and delicate voice (normally overshadowed by Fugazi lead vocalists, Ian MacKaye and Guy Picciotto) complements his bass lines and the minimalist James Brown-style drumming lying underneath. Like his band, Lally sings about socio-political issues, repeating the line "No destiny/as seen on TV" throughout the song like a mantra. This might be the closest we come to getting new music from Fugazi any time soon, but it should please fans and non-fans alike.

The Octopus Project "Truck" This Austin, Texas-based instrumental ensemble combines drums, bass, guitar, synthesizers and live theremin sounds to create something truly unique. "Truck" starts out with a simple, repeating theremin line which quickly builds into a collage of sounds including an all over bass line, open hi-hat heavy drums and furious distorted guitar riffs. The result is a cacophonic burst of sound that still manages to convey delicate, pleasant melodies.
