Sure that new movie might look good, but how is the soundtrack?
Bee Movie is the story of; you guessed it, a bee. Barry B. Benson (Jerry Seinfeld) has just graduated from college and has chosen making honey as his career. When he goes outside the hive and finds out that humans eat honey, he decides to sue the humans.
The soundtrack may not have much in the way of non-instrumental non-original music, but what it does have is the Archies’ classic “Sugar Sugar? and Sheryl Crow’s rendition of the Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun.? We’ll start with Sheryl Crow because good god, when was it that she decided that making horrible covers of good songs was okay? First we got to hear her completely destroy Led Zeppelin’s “D'Yer Mak'er,? then she wanted to wreck “Sweet Child O’ Mine? for the Big Daddy soundtrack and now she ruins the Beatles. When will it end? I was hoping that after her split with Lance Armstrong the foolishness would end.
The other track we’ll look at is slightly less rage inspiring. You have to give some credit to the Archies for naming not only their band, but the members of the band, after the sweet TV show and comic strip/book Archie. That’s where the positive for this one ends. Why is this song on the soundtrack for this movie? Oh yeah, because of the only part of the song that most people know. “Sugar…oh honey, honey?. I get it, bees make honey. How clever.
Rating this movie solely on the merit (or lack thereof) of these two songs, I would probably suggest that you stick a letter opener in your ear and be done with it. I hope for the sake of Jerry Seinfeld’s career that the movie doesn’t suck as bad as it sounds like it will.
If the two songs are any hint to the plot of the movie, it’s highly likely that Barry not only wins his lawsuit, but as payment, every member of the human race must be stung on the eyeball by a bee twice a day. Once for each song.
